Should I go to University?

I've just finished uni (yay!) and just looking back on the last three years, and beyond, and thinking about how I ended up doing the course that I did. It was never my plan growing up, and not at all linked to my a levels, but it was definitely the right thing for me to do.

Here a list of four questions that can help you work out if you should go to university. I don't have all the answers, but I hope this is helpful:

Do I want to go to University?

If you really want to go to uni to experience the 'uni life' or get away from home, go for it! If you are only planning to go because of parental or school pressure, take some time to work out if that's actually what you want. I know I felt a lot of pressure from my school to apply for uni, even though I knew that I wanted to take a gap year to think about the future.

Is your dream to become a doctor? If that is the case, you will have to go to university to train. But some jobs, such as becoming an accountant, doesn't require a degree; instead, you could get an apprenticeship. Have a look into different ways to get qualified in your dream job, and consider them all, not just the most popular.

Do I have to go to University now?

I'm so happy that I didn't go to University straight away but got an internship with a charity. I still got to move away from my family and be independent, but I got a year to gain experience, and ultimately decide that I wanted to do in the future. I 100% recommend gap years to everyone, even those who know what they want to do because it is an excellent opportunity to try something new and have a year without the stresses of studying.

Finally, is there anyone who can give me some unbiased advice?

This one is tough because most people have some degree of bias, even if they do not mean to. Ask parents, friends, teachers, career advisers, pray if that is something you do, as I find that talking to others is the best way for me to work out if I'm making the correct decision.

I hope this is helpful! As I said, I don't have all the answers, but I think everyone should think about it before doing what the seems like the 'right thing to do'.

Bye guys! Speak to you all soon.
