Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is a book I had heard loads about and was excited to read. I actually had no idea what it was about before reading it so had no preconceptions.

'I have realised that I am completely uninterested in food.'

The story is about Eleanor Oliphant so it plodding through life trying to show people that she is completely fine. She works in an office with people she doesn't know, and other than her weekly phone call with her mother, she has very little human connect. Very quickly, readers are made aware that something is not quite right, but it is all a mystery.

'It often feels as if I'm not here, that I'm a figment of my own imagination.'

This story is almost a coming of age novel, except she is an adult, but learning about most life experiences that most adults can navigate. Its an interesting concept, and excellently written, especially considering that it is Honeyman's first novel.

'They hate me, but they don't actually wish me dead. I don't think so, anyway.'

What I love about this is how vulnerable she is, and therefore how raw everything feels when reading the book. You feel like you are able to really get to know Eleanor and feel her joys, but also the deep darkness that she also feels.

'I have always taken great pride in managing my life alone.'

I would defiantly recommend this book, but warning, it is not the happy joyful book you may think it is.
