What I've been up to! April
The beginning of April was the Easter holidays, so I took some time off and went to visit family in Newcastle. The other week of the school holidays I was back in the office doing odd jobs and finishing my moorlands portfolio for my level 3 theology qualification.
The last mission academy with the current group was in the middle of April. Because it was the last session, we did no planning for future missions, but instead celebrated all that the young people had achieved whilst doing their mission projects. We played games and had a little bit of teaching, but the main aim of the day was to make mission into a lifestyle, rather than a one off event.
Last year, NYFC, with the help of many local churches, did a survey in schools across Norwich called who cares. The idea was to ask young people 'what hurts the most?' In order to do sessions in the school about what hurts them and to help them specifically. This meant that over one week, we had a youth bus in a school which was open at both break and lunch times for the students to come to in order to take about some of the issues that had come up in the survey. This was a great chance to just chat to the students and get to know them, as well as talk to them about the issues if they wanted to.
As part of another project, there is a youth cafe starting in Sirlingham every other week. Even though I am not helping at the group on a regular basis, I was at the first session in order to help the group get up and running. It was a very good session, with two young people who attended.
Every Thursday I am at a youth group in Lakenham, which was set up by a local church. In the group we play games during most of the session, such as fruit salad, and running noughts and crosses, and at the end of the session we show them a video, usually about someone's testimony, which they then answer questions in for points. One week, instead of showing the video, I was able to share my testimony. This was such a great opportunity for me to share, and the young people seemed to really engage with what I was saying.
To promote what we do at NYFC, we put a weekly update on YouTube most weeks. This usually promotes the extra things we do each week, which don't happen most weeks. However, this month we have filmed one which shows the regular groups we do each week.
Because one of the other gap years was away for a week, I covered one of his groups which was a music group. Here young people would meet together and play different songs that they have been learning with the aim to do one big project each term that they will be able to show at the end of the term. This was my first time at this group, and I'm not very musical, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. It was actually really fun though, and I even got to play a bit of the piano, not very well though!
As we have another anti bullying roadshow the beginning of May, we have started to rehearse again. This abr we are going into a school we went into earlier this year, but going to have the morning with a different year group.
Prayer points:
That I will get my moorlands portfolio back with no problems
The young people will continue doing small mission projects after finishing mission academy
The young people were able to take it what I said in my testimony and think about how God is in their own lives
The Anti bullying roadshow next month will go well
