How I ended up doing my gap year
In December I was asked to speak at my home church, at the evening carol service, about how God has been in my life. As I was one term into my gap year at the time, I talked about how I knew that God wanted me to do the gap year, and how God had acted through it. Now that I am at the end of my gap year I thought I would share what I said at that service.
'The whole time going through the last few years of secondary school and sixth form I wanted to do maths at uni, until about half way through my last year at sixth form when I knew that this isn't what I actually wanted to do.
This left me stuck not knowing what to do next, with all my friends applying for uni. I knew I wanted to take a gap year but I didn't know what to do.
I looked at lots of different gap years and found a gap year with youth for Christ called YFC one where I would be given a placement somewhere in the UK to do youth work.
I prayed then applied for this gap year, knowing that if God wanted me to do this gap year I would get in. Then in February I got in, and in July found out that my placement was going to be in Norwich.
I knew that God helped me get into to do the gap year.
I started to gap year in September, with a 10 day training conference before going to Norwich.
In Norwich I moved in with a host family and started the placement the next day, jumping straight into the deep end going into a school and doing a youth cafe on my first day. Some points of the year have been really challenging but it mostly has been really rewarding and lots of fun.
At the end of November we had a big worship event with loads of church youth groups in Norwich attending, and I was put in charge of the laptop, and making sure all the videos and words to worship would come up at the right time, something I have never done before. We had a speaker from hope revolution talking about how God has called us on a mission to serve him. When he asked if anyone wanted to dedicate their lives to God, about 20 young people responded to this, many for their first time. This was such an awesome response. We also had 36 young people sign up for mission academy, which is a way of teaching young people how to do reach out to their friends and tell them about God.
I've just finished my first term, And it's going really well. I know God wants me to do this gap year and I have seen many awesome things that God has done and I can't wait to go back in a couple of weeks.'
Prayer points:
I have more chances to share what God has done in my life
