Lala Land
After hearing the rave about Lala land, I went to see it with a couple of friends. My flatmates went to see it a couple of weeks before this and fell in love with it, so I had high expectations.
We went to Mcdonalds to sneak food into the cinema, bought tickets to the cheap cinema and went into a cold cinema screen where we kept warm under our coats. After the long adverts, the film finally began.
The film looks at the life of Sebastian, a Jazz pianist, and Mia, an actress. It goes through a year of their life whilst Sebastian is looking at opening his own Jazz bar and Mia auditions for different acting jobs during 2016/2017 whilst having a 50’s vibe about it (I loved the fusion between the two).
The music was amazing, the jazz vibes kept you dancing all the way through, the music inspired me to get out my flute and play my old jazz music from grade 3.
Unfortunately, that is where the amazing stopped for me and my friends.
I’ve read lots of reviews saying that Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone can't sing or dance, and it wasn't even that, I thought they were both great. It was the lack of plot that was bugging me. Nothing happens! If you're looking for a film of people singing, dancing and playing jazz music, this ticks all the boxes and more. It was shot so well, with the mix of traditional jazz mixed with the 21st century coming out of the screen.
I’m not putting a complete downer on this film though, overall I did like it, and would watch it again. My friend made the comment that it is one of those films where you skip over certain parts and rewatch other parts over and over again. I totally agreed with that comment.
Prayer points: I pray for those who are wanting to break out into music, that God will help them.
