Walk for freedom 2017

Walk for Freedom is a march to make awareness of modern day slavery. The March happens all around the world all on the same day. This year it took place on the 14th October. The marches are organised by the charity A21. The mission of A21 is to end slavery, the main way they do this is by raising awareness.

Just some statistics that shocked me when I was on the March:

  • There are more slaves now than ever in human history
  • Only 1% of slaves are ever rescued
  • Human trafficking in the fastest growing criminal activity in the world
  • There are estimated to be 27 million slaves in the world today

Slavery includes:

  • Sex trafficking
  • Forced labour
  • Child soldiers
  • Involuntary domestic servitude (servants)

People end up in slavery in many different ways, including:

  • False job advertising
  • Sold by family
  • Abduction
  • Sold by friends
  • False immigration

All this information shocks me which is why I wanted to do something. By being involved in this March I was able to spread awareness of the cause, and hopefully, increase the support that A21 has.

This picture is from the EDP article on the event.

Walk for freedom is a silent March where people walk single file and wear a bandana around their mouth to reflect people's voice being taken away from them. The bandanas had a name of a person who had been released from slavery. The walk started in Chapelfield gardens in Norwich and went all around the city centre. As we walked we were able to hand out leaflets letting people aware of why we were marching.

I am defiantly going to get involved next year, and I'm going to try and get more involved with A21 over the next year.

Bye guys! Speak to you all soon.
