Scotland '18: Inverness
While I was in Scotland, I spent a couple of days in Inverness. I wanted to go here so I could have a day trip to Loch Ness, but I had the chance to see lots of other places while I was there. Here are some of the places I went that I would recommend.
Botanic gardens.
The Botanic Gardens are about 30 mins walk away from the centre. It is free to visit, with donations accepted and a very cute little place. You don’t need long to walk around as it is quite small, but it has a great cafĂ© to visit as well. I would definitely recommend going here.
Leakey's bookshop.
Leakey’s bookshop is an amazing bookshop! I love old second-hand bookshops and the atmosphere there. Leakey’s reminded me of Barter Books in Northumberland, and even though I didn’t buy anything, I had a lot of fun exploring the shop.
Grieg street bridge.
Greig Street bridge is one of the main bridges in Inverness which goes over the River Ness. Standing on this bridge, you can see great views in both directions including the castle. The main thing I was not expecting from the bridge is how unstable it feels. It's almost bouncy, and you can feel other people walking on it, even on the other side.
Victorian Market.
Unfortunately, I went to the Victorian Market on a Sunday, so most of the stalls were closed, but it was very cute with a massive variety of shops. Next time I’m in the area I would love to go back on a day when more of the stalls were open.
Cathedral.
I had a chance to go to the 9:15 service at the Cathedral, and I really loved the experience. I’ve grown up going to church, but never such a formal church. I had never been to a church of Scotland before, and the Cathedral was really formal but I actually really enjoyed it. Most of the people there went weekly and were really friendly.
Castle viewpoint.
One place I wanted to go to but didn’t have the chance, because it was closed, was the Castle. I mainly wanted to go in order to go up the viewpoint, as the viewpoint was supposed to be amazing. If I were you, I would make sure you go as it looks fantastic.
Overall thoughts.
I really loved Inverness, but it was a shame that I was there over a weekend when most places close on a Sunday. My one piece of advice is to not go over a Sunday as lots of places are closed.
Bye guys! Speak to you all soon.
