30 countries by 30 years old... My thoughts

As it is the new year, loads of people are making new years resolutions. Mine has been the same every year for several years, go travelling more.

I hear a lot about people who go to 30 countries before they turn 30. This is a great idea, and something that I would love it do, but I'm definitely behind. I'm 22 and have been to 7 countries (and that's only if you count England, Scotland and Wales to be separate countries).

I think that ideas like this are great but have the potential to take the fun out of travelling, as you could be no longer doing it for the joy for seeing new places, but doing it to prove yourself (and sometimes others) that you are a cool person that travels to loads of places. I'm definitely not cool, and I feel like I don't travel enough, but seeing loads of new places is a passion of mine. As well as visiting all the countries in Europe (up to date list here), I would also love to visit all the cities in the UK, a country I have lived in my whole life (another up to date list here).

Even considering my thoughts on this trend, I'm going to give this a shot. It is definitely a long shot, but it would be fantastic if I could achieve this.

Here is a quick summary of the countries I have been to:

France:

I have been to France twice, once in year 4 (for a week), and once in year 11 (for a day), both as school trips to practise my (nonexistent) french. Both times we went to North France and drove there, and it was a great country to go to as my first time abroad.

Scotland:

I have been to Scotland many times to visit my Mums parents who spend quite a lot of their summer in Pitlochry. The first time I went to Scotland was when I was 14, and I've gone at least once a year since then. Last summer I also had the joy of travelling around Scotland for almost a month visiting friends.

Italy:

I have been to Italy twice, once as a Geography field trip in Naples in year 13, and once to Venice at the end of the same school year when I was 18 as an end of school celebration. The first trip abroad I went on without any adult supervision, Italy is one of the favourite countries I have even been to, and I would love to go back and explore more of the country.

Poland:

I went to Poland on a mystery trip when I was 20, and it was terrific. We went to Warsaw and had a few days staying in a hostel, exploring the city and meeting loads of great people.

Wales:

While staying with a friend in Bristol, close to the Wales/ England border, we went on a day trip to Cardiff. We spent the day at Cardiff Bay exploring the area, eating food, and looking in the cute shops. I would love to go back and explore more of the country.

Croatia:

I went to Croatia when I was 22 as an end of Uni holiday with a Friend. We stayed in Dubrovnik, and we had a great time. The weather was boiling, and we got to explore the city, a neighbouring town and an island just off the coast.

England:

I have lived in England my whole life and would love to be able to travel more of it. Since I was 15, I was determined that I was going to go to all the cities in the UK. There are so many in England, so I am definitely behind, but looking forward to some of them, especially Oxford.

I'll keep you all up to date with my travels, and who knows, maybe I will be successful with my 30 countries before 30.

Bye guys! Speak to you all soon.
