Warsaw: Day Two.

Day two was easily the busiest day we had out in Poland with loads of walking, I’m not sure I could walk by the end.

Breakfast

Our hostel has a deal with a local hotel that meant we could have our breakfast there for only 20 PLN (around £5). The food was alright but not great.

Old town

Our hostel was about a 20 minute walk away from the old town. The old town is such a nice area with loads of pretty building which were rebuilt after WW2 to look exactly the same as before hand. I love exploring new places so this was perfect for me with all the little shops and parks. I would have happily spent the whole day exploring here.

Walking tour

In the hostel there were loads of flyers for free walking tours so we decided to do this. In Warsaw there were loads of different companies going this with so many different tours, from WW2 Warsaw, to just the old town and the best of Warsaw, which is the one we went for. We went with the orange umbrella company, simply because it had the tour we wanted at the time we wanted, and I couldn’t recommend it more. The guy was absolutely lovely and took us round everywhere. He focused on taking us away from the touristy parts to make sure we got to see genuine warsaw. Even though my legs were in so much pain after to 2.5 hour walking tour, I loved it, and the tour guide was able to recommend loads of places for us to eat and visit. He even took us to the University of Warsaw, where he was studying.

Lunch

This was the first time when we are very stuck due to us not being able to speak even the simplest Polish. We were very hungry after walking so went into the first cafe we found. After sitting down, and realising that none of the members of staff spoke English, we ended up leaving and walking towards our next stop for the day, hoping we would find some food on the way. After quite a long walk (I accept that I may not have walked far, but it definitely felt it!) we found a TGI Fridays. We were tourn, we wanted to experience Polish food whilst away, but we were so hungry that we were past caring and went in. The food was great, and not so different to to TGI Fridays in the UK.

Museum one- Pawiak prison museum

Whilst researching Warsaw, we found 3 museums which looked really interesting and we wanted to go to, all quite close to each other. The first was Pawiak Prison museum which was only 5 zln (around £1.20). This was quite a small museum with only a few rooms. They had the old rooms which were used during WW2, with a recreation of the furniture which would have been used. They showed that many of the rooms which only had one or two people in before the war, had ten to twelve people in during the war; many people were kept there before being transported to Auschwitz.

Museum two- Polin

The next museum was the Polin museum, which was a lot bigger with 8 sections which took you through different stages in history, and what happened to Polish Jews in this time. This museum was more expensive than the first (20zln which is around £4.50) but definitely worth it. This spanned from 1000 ad, when Jews first arrived in Poland, to modern day, with a big focus on the holocaust. We definitely did not leave enough time for this museum, and had to rush at the end because it was closing. We had 2 hours but I would definitely leave at least 4 in the future. There were so many interactive sections, with recreated streets, look at the music over the ages and a cafe! (This was very important to us). This was where I was able to see the rich history Poland and Warsaw have and how it has impacted everyone who lives there. They were in conflict most of their history and it was so interesting to be able to see this through the city (from rebuilt buildings to bullet holes in walls). This was definitely the best of all the museums we visited in Warsaw, and if you only have time to visit one, you have to see Polin. By this point we had run out of time to go to the last museum so went there on the last day.

Bar

After getting an Uber back to the hostel, we spend a lot of time huddled in bed before Kerrie and I went out to the bar. This was my main experience of seeing how nice everyone was. I had never seen anyone there before, but all the other tourists and locals were so friendly and we spent hours chatting, playing games and drinking with them. Some of us went out to get some food as well. We even won a music quiz! (This may only be because the three of us on the team were English and it was English music, but I got a free shot so I didn’t care!).

I loved my first full day in Warsaw and thinking about it makes me really want to go back.

Bye guys! Speak to you all soon.
